High School Boys Results for 7/8

Division 1

Championship
FCA 12, Team Colorado 10
In a highly energetic game, FCA pulled out to a 5-0 lead that would prove too much for Team Colorado to overcome and FCA won their first U-19 Vail title 12-10. Colorado didn’t get on the board until the second quarter, only a few times coming within a couple goals of FCA. At the end of the day FCA’s incredibly consistent play while utilizing tremendous team depth ultimately kept them ahead. While Colorado fought hard throughout the game, their efforts proved to be too little, too late to overcome FCA large initial lead.

tl 2012 Divisional Preview tr

The fortieth edition of the “Granddaddy of them All”, the Vail Lacrosse Shootout marks a milestone requiring many thanks. It also marks the tenth year for the Dr. Tom Watts Memorial tournament. I know that Dr. Tom would join all of us who have been part of the U-19 High School Boys’ Showcase in thanking and congratulating Jim, Flip, all of the Directors and everyone else who has worked so hard to keep this great tournament alive and kicking for forty wonderful years. Those of us responsible for this particular portion of the tournament thank Jim and Flip for adding the High School Boys’ Showcase to the tournament 18 years ago. We join in the pride they must feel for the growth of our beloved sport, especially the growth west of the Hudson. The Shootout has been in no small way responsible for much of this spread to the west.

There will be a new champion this year. After six straight championships, we will miss the Baltimore Crab team this year, not only because they are the defending champs, but also for the excellence they display in the lacrosse they play. Unfortunately, scheduling prevented their appearance this year, but we look for them to challenge this years champ next June. Last year’s runner-up, FCA, (with most players from the Baltimore area) will be the team to beat this year. FCA has pushed the Crabs in the finals in each of the last two years and will present a formidable challenge to the other thirteen teams. Last year’s Division I fourth and fifth place finishers, the up and coming Brady’s Bunch (whose players, coaches, and fans are inspired by 4 year-old Brady’s battle with childhood cancer) and Team Colorado (frequently a bridesmaid to the Baltimore boys) hope to challenge for the top spot. Div. I eighth place finisher, True Lacrosse, returns from the great Midwest hoping to move forward in the bracket.

Many of last year’s Division II stalwarts return looking to break into the upper bracket. The HouLaGuns from Houston, Texas are last year’s Division II champs and are pushing to be a leader in D-I this year. Last year’s D-II runner-up from Nebraska, Jr. Buddha’s Ballers, and third through fifth place finishers, Winnipeg Wolverines, K.C. Blue Lion Elite, and the Western Colorado Mavericks, are also looking to move up in the ranks. Team Ohio returns after a one-year absence and past performance indicates a strong showing from the Buckeye state boys whose name has adorned the championship trophy more than once. First time entries, ADRLN Tropics from the Southwest, Laxachusetts, from—you guessed it—Massachusetts, and U19 NE 3D Select, primarily from the New England states, and the Local Favorites, from the mountain s of Colorado and the Vail staff, are unknowns, but promise strong entries that will challenge for the top spot. Once again, the U-19 Division offers teams from across the US and from north of the border. The tournament will be capped with the Division II Consolation Championship and the Division I U-19 Championship in the shadow of the magnificent, snow-capped Gore Range at Ford Field on Sunday. This setting furnishes the ideal location for our 18th final and our chance to award the Dr. Tom Watts travelling trophy to the Champs, salute the All Star team members, and honor the founders and supporters of the largest LAX tournament in the US on its fortieth anniversary. Join us there on Sunday.
