tl Day 4 Report - July 4th tr

Maverik Elite trailed Team Chipotle early in the game but took a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back in route to a resounding 14-7 win in the 2010 Vail Lacrosse Shootout Men’s Elite Championship game.

Maverik utilized their outstanding talent on both ends of the field to win the game. On offense, Vail Shootout All-Star Sean Lindsey (Syracuse ‘10) dominated, with seven points on six goals and one assist. Tournament Offensive MVP, Steve Keogh (Syracuse ’11) used his great vision and Canadian style of play to score four goals and one assist.

On the defensive end for Maverik, All-Star and Tournament Defensive MVP John Galloway (Syracuse ’11) finished with fifteen saves, stopping 68% of the shots he faced on the day. Galloway was phenomenal all tournament, fluidly making save after save in each game.

For Chipotle, Tournament All-Star Patrick Murray (Georgetown ’13) did a splendid job facing off, winning 60% of the draws today. Murray, who returned after competing with last year’s U19 Team Colorado was a force at the face off “X” all week for Chipotle, and at only 19 years of age the future looks bright for this young man from Denver.

Maverik was certainly the favorite coming into the game with their talented roster but Chipotle had the crowd on their side as their squad was mostly made up of players from Colorado. At the end of the day Maverik left little doubt as to who the better team was and celebrated their Championship in style as the Vail Lacrosse Shootout ended its 38th year.

tl Day 3 Report - July 3rd tr

In the first semifinal match-up of the day, Maverik Elite continued to show why many believe they are one of the best teams to play in the Shootout in several years with an impressive win over Team 21. Maverik led 7-5 at halftime behind the efforts of Casey Powell (Syracuse ’97) four points and John Galloway’s (Syracuse ’11) 10 saves. Galloway finished with 19 saves in an impressive performance that wrapped up in Maverik’s favor 13-6.

Maverik continues to get solid play from Powell, who finished with seven points on three goals and four assists and Eric Boyle (Maryland ’11), who had three goals as well as stellar face-off work by Lou Braun (Johns Hopkins ’04) and appear to have a great mix of veteran and youth talent heading into the final tomorrow. If they continue to dominate groundballs and possession time, they will be tough to beat.

In the second semifinal, it didn’t take long for Team Chipotle to get up on Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain Oysters leading 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and 7-1 at halftime, mostly thanks to the goaltending of Peyton Tyrie (Denver ’10), who had eight first-half saves, and an aggressive transition game. The Oysters tried to mount a comeback in the third quarter, but Chipotle had an answer ever y time, eventually pulling away to win 14-5.

Midfielders Andrew Lay (Denver ’12) and Joey Murray (Denver ’09) are playing well right now and Chipotle also got a solid contribution from a balanced attack unit to move to the championship game. No one on the field had more than two goals for Chipotle, who are using their depth and athleticism to their advantage.

Looking at the teams on paper, Maverik certainly will have the edge, but Chipotle showed tremendous heart and resiliency in their quarterfinal comeback against Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear and then looked comfortable playing from in front today. Face-offs will be a key as Braun has been dominant so far for Maverik. Chipotle has used long-stick middie Pat Murray (Georgetown ’13) to take draws and he will have his hands full with Braun tomorrow. Galloway has been a difference both in the cage and in the clearing game for Maverik as well.

But Chipotle’s strength is their quality in numbers. With no one in particular to key in on, the team has found a way to score goals in myriad ways, so the match-up will be intriguing. Look for Chipotle to push in transition and get some easy goals while at the same time protecting against Maverik’s lethal fast-break game.

tl Day 2 Report - July 2nd tr

Two of Vail’s premiere teams bowed out in the quarterfinals as Team One’s Jammin’ Salmon and Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear each dropped their contests on Friday. Jammin’ Salmon fell behind early to tournament favorite Maverik Elite and made a valiant comeback, but came up just a little short. The Salmon have been stalwarts in Vail for years and made the most of their tough match-up before eventually succumbing 12-9.

Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear, last year’s tournament champs and this year’s #1 seed, jumped out to a 7-0 lead against Denver-based Chipotle. But the young Chipotle squad slowly “chipped” away at ML’s lead and finally overcame them in the fourth quarter, winning an entertaining 11-9 contest. ML had all the talent in the world, but not quite enough numbers to stave off the energetic and numerous Chipotle team.

In other quarterfinal action, Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain Oysters were impressive in a 16-10 win over The Med. The Oysters have scored 30 goals in their two games and are playing extremely well. Team 21 jumped out early on the East Coast Kings and never looked back en route to an easy 15-1 win in the final game of the day at Ford.

Saturday semifinal games will be on Ford as Maverik Elite takes on Team 21 at 11:00am and Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain Oysters faces off against Team Chipotle at 1:00pm. Of the teams remaining, Team 21 is the only with championship experience, having hoisted the hardware in 2008. Maverik Elite continues to be the favorite with their stacked roster, but Team 21’s togetherness will make them a tough out. On the other side, the Oysters and Chipotle will feature plenty of local talent as both teams pull hard from the local lacrosse scene. Both games are intriguing and will be entertaining match-ups as the Vail Shootout finishes up.

tl Day 1 Report - July 1st tr

Most of the top seeds moved through on day 1 of the Men’s Elite tournament. Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear and Team 21, the #1 and #2 seeds respectively, both took a little time to get moving against the play-in winners, but both pulled away to move to the quarterfinals. Team Sasquatch won the first game of the day in double overtime with a two-point goal in the most exciting game of an otherwise workmanlike day.

One of the stronger teams looks to be Maverik Elite, which features Jovan Miller and John Galloway (current Syracuse players), Casey Powell and Sean Lindsey (old Syracuse players) and great players up and down the roster. Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear is likely the other favorite, but it took them some time to get it going against Sasquatch.

The East Coast Kings won 16-12 against the Olympic Club and should give Team 21 a great game tomorrow in the quarterfinals. In fact, all of the quarterfinal match-ups should be good on Friday as Merrill Lynch plays a young Chipotle squad, The Med (Thursdays only upset winner) matches up against Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain Oysters and Team One’s Jammin’ Salmon play Maverik Elite all on Ford Field.

tl 2010 Preview tr

Vail’s Men’s Elite Tournament is back for the 38th year in 2010, once again featuring some of the country’s best young lacrosse talent.  After a lengthy climb up the tournament ladder, Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear finally broke through to win the championship in 2009.  It was an emphatic four-game showing for ML, who featured several players on their roster that ended up in the professional ranks this summer.

This year’s tournament returns five of the top seven teams from last year, including 2009 runners-up Team 21 and long-time tournament stalwart, Team One’s Jammin’ Salmon.  New England-based Brine Elite soared all the way to a fifth place finish last year and will have the inside track at their first semifinal bid this tournament.

As always, the Colorado-based entries are strong in 2010 and include Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain Oysters and Team Chipotle, both coming off impressive 2009 tournaments.  Victorious Secret, the Med and the Lofers will also feature loads of local talent with a smattering of Back East ringers.

Vail has always featured some form of alumni gatherings in the Elite Division and 2010 is no different.  Team Gutman is the Middlebury-based group while 83 ½ Lacrosse is mostly former Bowdoin Polar Bears.  Don’t overlook Cornell’s Team 21, who earned the title in 2008 and are perennially near the top of the draw.

Our returning regional entrants include the Olympic Club (northern California) and Team Awesome (Southeast).  Bigfoot Lacrosse (Pacific Northwest), Fender Benders (Ohio) and the East Coast Kings (Tri-State area) are all new teams in 2010 and will look to make a splash at this year’s tournament.

Rounding out the tournament in 2010 is Maverik Elite, a dark-horse team of players who have helped design and create Maverik lacrosse.  This team could easily make a run at the semifinals or even further with their lacrosse pedigree.

18 teams will enter the Vail thunderdome this year, but only one can leave as champion.  Four games in four days is a tough task for any team, but as is standard for the tournament, the on and off field antics will be one for the books!

Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear

Coach:  Paul Landaiche Jr.

Team Preview:  Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear won their first championship in 2009, thanks to the stellar play of a small, but talented group of Division I players.  In 2010, they look to return to the top of the heap and become the first repeat champions of the Elite Division in nearly a decade.  With many returners and a bevy of youngsters fresh off NCAA seasons, don’t be surprised if Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear is once again holding the hardware at the end of the week.  Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear once again competes in the name of cancer research.

Team 21

Coaches/Organizers:  David Coors, Ryan Geller

Team Preview:  2010 will be Team 21’s sixth return to Vail Lacrosse Shootout.  Although the number of returning members from the inaugural team continues to decrease, the team focuses to remain strong and true to its core.  At the core of the team is the spirit of George Boiardi.  George wore the number 21 at Cornell University and fatefully fell in 2004 during a lacrosse contest his senior year.  George exemplified everything it means to be a great teammate, showing not only incredible athletic ability and tireless work ethic on the field, but admirable character and a selfless lifestyle off the field.  For the members of Team 21, it is not only George’s athleticism and character that we honor, but his love for the game, the friendships we all shared with him and the legacy he is leaving behind.

We would like to thank our main sponsors: Coors Light, Concept Capital and Nike.  Additionally we would like to thank Chris Packard, Mike Voris, Tim Deblois, Scott Raasch, Dan Leary, Andrew Collins, Scott Lee, the Boiardi Family and others who have helped support the team this year.  Without you this team would not be the same.

Team 21 continues to support the Mario St. George Boiardi Foundation.  For more information or to make a donation please visit the website at http://www.boiardifoundation.org/.

“Mario St. George Boiardi. Tireless worker, selfless teammate and loyal friend who gave his life playing the game he loved.”

The majority of the East Coast Kings have been playing with or against each other since grade school and have continued their careers in Division I lacrosse. Organized by Bryan Hopper with help from Heather Faircloth, a major benefactor of Colorado Lacrosse, this will be the Kings’ second year coming to Vail.  Last year in the U-19 Division they came in 3rd after losing to the Baltimore Crabs in a heated 13-12 semifinal game that ended with much controversy and will use that loss as a big motivating factor this year in the Elite Division.

Team Preview:  Victorious Secret was created two summers ago in the U19 division comprised of Denver players who were not in town for the tryouts of Team Colorado.  Victorious Secret went on an amazing run and finished second in the tournament, losing to the Baltimore Crabs in the championship game.  Now in their third year at Vail, Victorious Secret has loads of talent with players from Denver, Ohio State, Penn State, and Penn leading the way.  A young team made up of the 2012 and 2013 classes, Victorious Secret should be an exciting young team to watch in 2010.
