Monday July 3rd's Men's Elite Semifinals @ Ford Field:
#2
Go Fast 7, #6 Lacrossewear/Jammin Salmon 3
It seemed as if the game might never start, as the first semifinal
between Go Fast and Jammin' Salmon was repeatedly delayed by rain and lightning. Originally
scheduled for 1pm, the game finally started around 3:30pm and officials were forced to use
running clocks for the first three quarters.
The goals in this game came in bunches for each team. After a tight game for the majority
of the first quarter, the Salmon broke the silence with a pair of goals from Peter Troup
(Salisbury, 1999) to take a 2-0 lead by the end of the quarter. They continued the assault,
adding another goal just three minutes into the second, with a tally from midfielder Alex
Hufnagel (Dartmouth, 07).
That was all that would come from the Salmon, as Go Fast would start their
attack that would eventually score seven unanswered goals to end the game. Contributing
to the effort was Spencer Cooperman(Colgate, 2009), Evan Kay (UMBC, 2007), and Greer Hanlon
(Denver, 2005) with a pair of goals each. Dillon Roy (Denver, 2010) also added a goal.
Go Fast will advance to meet Team Mammoth in the Men's Elite Championship
tomorrow at 2:30pm at Ford Field.
#5
Team Mammoth 10, #1 GMH 7
The second semifinal of the day was also pushed back due to the
rain delay earlier in the day. The game got underway about 5:30pm, and featured what many
considered to be the premier match-up of the tournament. Joining Team Mammoth for the first
time in the tournament was superstar attackman John Grant Jr. (Deleware, '01) and all-star
midfielder Brodie Merrill (Georgetown, '05).
Both teams started the game anxious and determined, but it was GMH that would strike first
on an unassisted goal from Pete Cannon (Georgetown, '06). The Mammoth would respond with
three consecutive goals from Grant Jr., Gavin Prout (Loyola, '98) and Colin Doyle (Kitchener,
ON). The sides would trade goals one more time before halftime, as Mark Morley (UMass, '02)
tallied for GMH and Doyle responded with his second of the game for Mammoth. The score at
halftime had the Mammoth leading 4-2.
The scoring doubled in the 3rd quarter, with each team recording three
goals. Morley recorded two more goals and Pete Cannon had his second for GMH, who started
to get the momentum swinging in their favor towards the end of the quarter. Gary Gait (Syracuse,
'92) got on the board for Mammoth with his first of the game, as did Jordan Hall (Deleware,
'07) and Billy Dee Smith (St. Catherines, ON).
After an early Mammoth strike from Andrew Turner (Lakehead, '00), GMH would
pull within a goal midway through the 4th quarter on shots from Cannon and Mike Holloway
(Villanova, '02). However, the team ultimately hurt themselves with a pair of slashing penalties
that lead to Colin Doyle's third strike of the game. That gave Mammoth a two goal lead that
they would not surrender. Grant Jr. added an additional tally with 1:11 remaining to make
the final score Mammoth 10, GMH 7.
The Mammoth will advance to the championship game tomorrow at 2:30pm to
take on Go Fast at Ford Field.
