Mens Quarterfinals on Ford Field:
#1 GMH 10, #8
Rocky Mountain Oysters 6
The final quarterfinal found the defending champion GMH battling the Rocky Mountain Oysters
for a trip to the semis. In the round of 16, GMH routed the Club All-Stars 15-5. The Oysters
gutted Team Guttman 12-8.
The first quarter featured tight defense, as the first goal was scored
with jus 4:57 remaining, a hard shot from Oysters midfielder Brett Hamilton-Koll just after
a holding penalty expired on GMH goalie Jonathan Schneider. GMH responded two minutes later
with a strike from Mark Morley. The score was tied at the end of the first.
Each team recorded three goals in the second half, as GMH recorded goals
from Athan Iannucci and Morley within the first two minutes of play. The Oysters answered
with three goals in a row, including a pair from John Galvin and a one spot by Adam Miller.
GMH added the last goal of the half, a second strike for Iannucci, to tie the game at 4.
The halftime stats were ery close for each team, with GMH goalie Jonathan Schneider recording
nine saves, and the Oysters goalie, Brendan Winkler, stopping eight shots.
The third quarter continued to find the teams in a deadlock early on,
as the Oysters grabbed the lead with Hamilton-Koll's second goal of the game. GMH finally
broke out towards the end of the quarter, racking up three goals in the last three minutes.
Iannucci and Morley each picked up their third of the game, and Pennsylvania native Brendon
Cannon added an additional goal.
The fourth quarter started off with GMH continuing to attack as Mike Young fired a shot past
Winkler just 30 seconds in and Mike Holloway connected a minute later. Galvin responded for
the Oysters with his third of the game, but Iannucci added his fourth of the game to clinch
the game for GMH.
GMH will advance to the semifinals to face Team Mammoth tomorrow
at 3pm at Ford Field.
#2 Go Fast 15,
#7 Merrill Lynch 13
The third quarterfinal of the day featured Go Fast, who exploded into the tournament with
a 14-1 win over the Generals. Their opponent, Merrill Lynch, scored their share of goals
as well in a 19-10 decision against City Grille/Flying Dog. On paper this game looks to
be a great match-up.
Both teams came out firing and traded goals back and forth in the first
quarter as the first 11 goals alternated teams. Mike Debrossy and Greer Hanlon each had
a pair of goals for Go Fast. Garrett Stanwick and Michael Donegar each recorded a goal a
piece. Tallying for Merrill Lynch was Kris Davis (2), Hunter Price, Luke Gilbert, and Jay
Rostan. Go Fast goalie, All-American Jesse Schwartzman (Johns Hopkins) finished the first
quarter with 5 saves.
The rest of the game was much of the same story, as both teams fought to
keep it close. The largest lead of any kind was a 3-goal advantage that Go Fast took at
the beginning of the second half. Merrill Lynch found themselves behind all game, but kept
fighting back to force the tie. Go Fast gave up several key turnovers that lead directly
to goals, but continued to successfully scrape back into the lead. The game was knotted
at 13 with four minutes remaining when Go Fast pulled ahead for the last time. Clutch goals
by Donegar and Rocco Romero gave Go Fast the 15-13 victory.
Big gamers for Go Fast were Michael Donegar (5G,1A), Rocco Romero (3G,1A).
Answering the call for Merrill Lynch was Luke Gilbert (5G,4A) and Kris Davis (3G).
Jesse Schwartzman finished with 11 saves for Go Fast, while Matt Madalon
stopped 9 shots for Merrill Lynch.
Go Fast advances to the semi-finals to face Jammin' Salmon at 1pm tomorrow
at Ford Field.
#5 Team Mammoth
17, #4 Team 21 5
The early morning quarterfinal featured a match-up between Team 21 and Team Mammoth. The
skies were clear as the Mammoth controlled the first half. Six different players scored
in the first half, with the Mammoth recording tallies from Gavin Prout, Lewis Ratcliff,
Billy Dee Smith, and Matthew Vinc. Team 21 responded with goals from Colin Crawford and
David Pittard. The score at the end of the first quarter was Mammoth-4, Team 21-2.
The second quarter was dominated by the Mammoth as they scored seven unanswered goals. Steve
Govett and Gary Gait each netted two goals, and Gavin Prout added three assists to bring
the score to 11-2 in favor of the Mammoth at halftime. Both goalies finished with two saves
at halftime.
The Mammoth continued the attack in the third, adding
goals from Govett, Prout, and Jordan Hall. Team 21 broke Mammoth's streak of 10 straight
goals, scoring a man-up goal by Sean Greenhalgh with one second remaining in the quarter.
Mammoth leads 14-3 at the end of the third quarter.
The scoring continued for the Mammoth in the 4th, picking up another goal from Jeff Zywicki,
Gait, and a man-up goal from Shawn Williams. Team 21 added goals from Ian Rosenberger and
Nate Haswell. The Mammoth will advance to the Elite semifinals to take on the winner of
the GMH vs. Rocky Mtn. Oysters at 3pm tomorrow at Ford Field.
#6 Lacrossewear/Jammin
Salmon 15, #14 5280/Tap Room 6
The second quarterfinal of the day featured the Lacrossewear Jammin' Salmon taking on Team
5280/Tap Room, who scored a huge upset in the round of 16, squeaking by Rock-It Pocket.
Salmon advanced into this game with a 15-9 win against IAS Select. Will Tap Room be able
to score another upset?
Both team played tight defense in the first quarter, as only four goals
were scored. The Jammin' Salmon struck with the first two goals of the game, coming from
Peter Troup and player/coach Joe Hope. Tap Room answered with a strike from Jared McNichol
before Chris Bromby answered with a man-up goal with :38 remaining in the quarter. Tap Room
goalie Chris Bluse kept his team in the game with eight saves in the quarter alone.
The second quarter proved to be very strong for Tap Room, as they pulled
within a goal before half time. Scoring for the team was Sam Allen, Alan Tiet, and Nick
Stoffel. Bluse made another three saves to bring his game total to 11. Adding goals for
the Salmon was Matt Casey and Peter Troup. The halftime score: Jammin' Salmon 5, Tap Room
4.
Tap Room tied the game two minutes into the fourth quarter on a goal by
John Zulberti, a 1976 graduate of Syracuse. That was all that Tap Room could muster before
Salmon went on a four goal run, getting tallies from Bromby, Ryan Maciaszek, Alex Hufnagel,
and Troup. The Jammin' Salmon held a commanding 9-5 lead before Tap Room's Jon Atwood snuck
a shot past goalie Matt Troy to narrow the lead to 9-6 at the end of the third.
Salmon added five more goals in the fourth quarter on shots from Nick Bonacci(2), Joe Hope
(2 man-up goals), Hufnagel, and McAdory Lipscomb. The team will advance to the semifinals
to face the winner of Merrill Lynch vs. Go Fast tomorrow at 1pm. The game will take place
at Ford Field.
